Is fencing safe?

Yes! Fencing is very safe. We follow the specific rules of the sport carefully, and respect the weapon(s). We ALWAYS wear safety gear and teach our students to fence safely and responsibly. With the exception of an occasional bruise, fencing has one of the lowest rates of injury of any sport.

Is fencing just a boys sport or can anyone fence?

Anyone can learn to fence! Both men and women from to youth to seniors are learning to fence. It's a great way to get in shape and stay in shape.

Does it hurt?

Not if done properly. Even if executed with appreciable energy, a good, clean fencing attack hurts no more than a tap on the shoulder. Proper warm up and stretching before fencing will minimize these occurrences. As with any sport or physical activity there is always a risk of injury. Common sense precautions and realistic training goals are the best prevention.

What equipment do I need to start fencing?

All you need to start fencing is athletic pants and shoes, a t-shirt, a bottle of water...AND a desire to strike blades with another! All fencing equipment is provided free of charge for the first 2 months at the Coastside Academy in San Francisco.

How do I signup by phone or email?

Call the Program Director, Jade, at 415-710-3355 or email her at jade@coastsidefencers.com. It’s that easy!

How can I pay for classes?

What age do you have to be to start fencing?

We usually teach fencers from the ages of 6 and up! Adults of all ages are welcome too!

How do I get my child into competitive fencing?

We usually recommend a three-fold training program for competitive Fencing. This involves (at least) one class a week, one or more private lessons and regular participation at Fight club. When your child is ready to go to competition, your coach will walk you through the process. Adults are encouraged to compete too!

What is “Fight Club”?

Fight club is a weekly practice for all members of the club. There is no instruction, but rather a chance to gain experience fencing other member and peers. Fight club is an excellent way to prepare for competitions and is highly encouraged by our coaches.
